Your settings could be preventing you from being easily reached, or even found, on LinkedIn.
I frequently come across profiles with email addresses that are only shown to existing connections. That only gives people the option to reach out by sending a connection request and waiting to get accepted in order to see the email or send a direct message.
Of course, if you don’t want people to reach you easily, it’s totally fine to be more reserved and require people to send you an invite (and get approved) to get access to you.
But if you want people to find you and hire you, or invite you to do things, make it easy on them. Or they may move on to someone who is easier to reach.
Check your visibility with these LinkedIn settings
- Account Preferences > Showing Profile Photo > set to ALL LINKEDIN MEMBERS
- Visibility > Who can see or download your email address > set to ANYONE ON LINKEDIN
- Visibility > Who can see your last name > set to FULL NAME
- Visibility > Profile Discovery and Visibility off LinkedIn > set to ON
- Visibility > Mentioned by Others > Set to ON
- Data privacy > Who can reach you > Invitations to connect > set to EVERYONE
- Data privacy > Who can reach you > Messages > set all to on (unless you don’t want recruiters for job opportunities, then leave the last one off)
This will only take a few minutes for you to check, but it will make a significant difference in the long run.
Relationships drive everything from hiring to partnerships to thought leadership, and being easy to reach is a strategic choice. It signals openness, confidence, and readiness to engage.
From where I sit, that is often the difference between being considered and being overlooked.
